Enjoy a family outing and cool down with the kids at a neighbourhood splash pad this summer.

The City of Oshawa has nine splash pad locations located throughout the community that are open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Two splash pads – Lakeview Park and Legends Centre – are now open for the season.

The other splash pad locations – Baker Park, Easton Park, Glen Stewart Park, Lake Vista Park, Mackenzie Park, Northview Park and Rotary Park – will all open on Wednesday, June 1.

Accessible splash pads are located at Baker Park and Lakeview Park, and at Legends Centre, which also includes an accessible playground.

“We’re starting to get some hot days and no doubt our kids are looking for a way to cool off. Our splash pads can provide some relief from the heat – much better than a garden hose,” said Councillor Bob Chapman, Chair of the Community Services Committee.

The City of Oshawa invites the community to complete a survey and submit their tips on how to encourage children 12 and under to choose water over sugary beverages. Residents can do so online on the Connect Oshawa engagement website or in-person at Service Oshawa and City of Oshawa recreation facilities.

The results will help guide Healthy Kids Community Challenge activities and programs related to the theme of access to safe, free, and clean water in Oshawa. The survey will close on June 30 and is part of Oshawa’s Healthy Kids Community Challenge, which includes numerous community partners.

“As part of our Healthy Kids Community Challenge we want to encourage kids to drink more water,” said Councillor Bob Chapman, Chair of the Community Services Committee. “We are looking for your ideas on how to do this. All suggestions are welcome.”

In 2015, Oshawa along with 44 other communities across Ontario, received provincial funding from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to promote healthy eating, physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices for children 12 and under. Oshawa will receive up to $1.25 million in funding to implement the Healthy Kids Community Challenge.

“The City of Oshawa accepts the challenge,” said Oshawa Mayor John Henry. “We’re thrilled to work with our community partners to help our kids get and stay active and learn about healthy lifestyles.”

Between Thursday, April 21 and Thursday, May 5, the public was invited to provide feedback that will guide the redevelopment of Glen Stewart Park’s playground, splash pad and parking lot, and they did not disappoint.

“We appreciate all the comments and input from the citizens living in this community”, said Councillor John Aker, Chair of the Development Services Committee. “All of us want Glen Stewart Park to be a great recreation destination to be enjoyed by all”.

65 members of the community, aged 18 – 65+, captured their current views and usage habits, as well as their hopes and visions for the Park’s playground, splash pad and parking lot redevelopment in a survey.

An identical survey was used at both engagement opportunities:

    • 38 individuals attended the Public Open House on Thursday, April 28, with 24 completing the survey and submitting feedback, while
    • 41 shared their thoughts online on Connect Oshawa during the campaign period.

Additionally, community feedback shared on Facebook and Twitter was collected and shared with the City’s project team.

“Many thanks to those that provided comments and suggestions on the park redevelopment”, said Councillor Bob Chapman, Chair of the Community Services Committee. “I know staff will give these careful consideration when developing the plan to improve Glen Stewart Park”.

Staff will now review the public’s input and use it to guide future decision-making on the playground, splash pad and parking lot projects. Upgrades to the Glen Stewart Park ball diamonds will be based on recommendations from the Outdoor Field Study (2004) and Parks, Recreation, Library and Culture Facility Needs Assessment, which sought feedback from the public in late 2014.

The Park redevelopment is anticipated to begin in September 2016 and continue through to the fall of 2017. To learn more, visit the Glen Stewart Park Redevelopment webpage.
