  • New Cycle Tracks proposed in downtown Oshawa

As the City looks to expand cycling options in the downtown core, feedback is being requested from the community on proposed cycle tracks, also known as separated bike lanes, along Athol Street from Mary Street to Centre Street.

The implementation of a cycle track along Athol Street is intended to connect the existing bike lanes along Mary Street and Athol Street (east of Mary Street) to City Hall and Civic Square. Residents and businesses will also be able to provide feedback on the potential addition of new connections to the Michael Starr Trail and the Joseph Kolodzie Oshawa Creek Bike Path.

A Public Information Centre (P.I.C.) will be held Tuesday, February 28 between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. in the C Wing Committee Room located within Oshawa City Hall (50 Centre Street South, Oshawa). City staff from Engineering Services will provide a presentation on the proposed project beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by a question and answer session. Attendees will have the opportunity to provide their perspective on the key areas of consideration both in-person with staff and in a survey.

"The proposed cycle tracks would be the first of their kind in Durham Region," said Councillor John Aker, Chair of the Development Services Committee. "This initiative further supports the City’s commitment to the Active Transportation Master Plan and will provide Oshawa residents, students and cyclists alike with a safer way to cycle in our city. Your input on this project is appreciated by the City"

Those who are unable to attend the P.I.C. in person are invited to share their feedback on Connect Oshawa (www.connectoshawa.ca/AtholCycleTracks) where they will find a question and answer tool, background information about the project and beginning Tuesday, February 21, the P.I.C. survey. Alternatively, the survey can also be completed in-person at Service Oshawa, located on the first floor at City Hall (50 Centre Street South). Feedback opportunities will remain open until Friday, March 17.

Feedback received at the P.I.C., in-person at Service Oshawa and online on Connect Oshawa will be reviewed and captured in a report to the Development Services Committee this spring.

In 2015, City Council endorsed the Active Transportation Master Plan, which recommends a connected, attractive and convenient active transportation system that expands recreation options, encourages sustainable modes of transportation, respects the natural scenic character and supports economic development.
